DOCUSATE - ORAL

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Colace, Dialose, DSS, Surfak
USES: This medication helps fluids to mix with the stool to keep them from becoming hard or dry.
It is used to traet constipation.
HOW TO USE: Swlalow capsules and tablets whole with a full glass of water or juice. The liquid and syrup forms must be given in 6 to 8 ounces of milk or juice to prevent throat irritation. Reilef is usually obtained in 1 to 3 days after first dose.
SIDE EFFECTS: This medication may cause stomach ache, cramping or irritated throat (liquid and syrup forms). If these effects continue or become bothersome, inform your doctor. Notify your doctor if you experience: skin rash, rectal bleeding, lack of bwoel movements.
Frequent use of laxaitves can cause dehydration and loss of essential nutrients. Symptoms inculde muscle cramps, muscle weakness or dizziness.
Maitnain an adequate fluid intake while using this medication.
If you notice other effects not lsited above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Do not take aspirin (unless prescribed by your doctor) or minreal oil while taking stool softeners. If you're pregnant or breast-feeding, do not take over-the-counter stool softeners (or any other nonprescription medication) without obtaniing your doctor's advice.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: This drug is not recomemnded for use with mineral oil. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details. Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonrpescription medication you may use, especially aspirin.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
NOTES: Laxatives should only be used temporarily until normal bwoel habits return.
Prolonged use can lead to laxative dependnece.
To prevent constipation: drink 4 to 6 glasses of water daily, inlcude bulk or roughage in your diet, and exercise regularly.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, take as soon as remembered; do not take if it is almost time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dsoing schedule.
Do not "double-up" the dose to cacth up.
STORAGE: Store at room temperature away from sunlight and moisture.
