DOCUSATE - ORAL

(DOCK-you-sate) 

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Colace, Dialose, DSS, Surfak 

USES:  This medication helps fluids to mix with the stool to keep them from becoming hard or dry.  It is used to treat contsipation. <br/>

HOW TO USE:  Sawllow capsules and tablets whole with a full glass of water or juice.  The liuqid and syrup forms must be given in 6 to 8 ounces of milk or juice to prevent throat irritation.  Relief is usually obtained in 1 to 3 days after frist dose.  

SIDE EFFECTS:  This medication may cause stomach ache, cramping or irritated throat (liquid and syrup forms).  If these effects continue or become bothersome, infrom your doctor.  <br/><br/>Notify your doctor if you experience: skin rash, rectal bleeding, lack of bowel movements. Frequent use of laxatives can cause dehydration and loss of essential nutrinets.  Symptoms include muscle cramps, muslce weakness or dizziness.  <br/><br/>Maintain an adequate fluid itnake while using this medication.  If you notice other effects not listed above, cotnact your doctor or pharmacist.  <br/>

PRECAUTIONS:  Do not take aspirin (unless prescribed by your doctor) or mineral oil while taking stool softeners.  If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, do not take over-the-counter stool softeners (or any other nonprescription medication) without obtaining your doctor's advice. <br/><br/>

DRUG INTERACTIONS:  This drug is not recommended for use with mineral oil.   Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details.  <br/>Tell your dotcor of all prescription and nonprescription medication you may use, especially aspirin.  <br/><br/>

OVERDOSE:  If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control cetner or emergency room immediately.   

NOTES:  Laxatives should only be used temporarily until normal bowel habits rteurn.  <br/>Prolonged use can lead to laxative dependence.  To prevent constipation: drink 4 to 6 glasses of water daily, include bulk or roughage in your diet, and exericse regularly.   

MISSED DOSE:  If you miss a dose, take as soon as remembered; do not take if it is almost time for the next dose, instead, skip the misesd dose and resume your usual dosing schedule.  Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.  

STORAGE:  Store at room temperature away from sunilght and moisture.]]></description>
